Study Tour Programme

 Section 37 - Genealogy and Local History Section  organizes an annual study tour program in conjunction with the World Library and Information Congress.  This year's programme will take place on Friday, 13 August 2010, 10:00 - 16:30.  The group will visit the Gothenburg City Library and the Regional State Archives.  (Please note that the Archives are currently under reconstruction.  If it not possible to visit, the programme will be adjusted accordingly).

10:00-10:30
Welcome.  Presentation of the resources of the Gothenburg City Library.

10:40-11:00
Introduction to genealogical research in Sweden. The structure of the genealogical and local history associations, the special assocations and the local communities collecting and communicating historical material.  The structure of the State Archives, publicity, accessibility.

11:10-11:30
The Regional State Archives.  History, statistics and collections of the Regional State Archives.

11:40-12:40
Lunch.  May be organized but is at participants' expense.

12:40-13:30
Visit to Regional State Archives. Please note the the Archives are currently under reconstruction so the visit has been scheduled tentatively. If the visit proceeds, the afternoon sessions will be slightly reduced in length.

Sources for genealogy.  Possibilities of finding genealogical material and how to get access to it.

13:30-13:50
Access to cultural heritage material through private companies

14:00-14:30
Visit to Mediakonverteringcentrum (Media Conversion Center)
.  The facilty is used by the National Archives Department of Digitisation and produces about 100,000 digital images per day.  The scanning facility is considered to be outstanding in Europe in its capacity for scanning of historical documents.
