It is with great pleasure that the Municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico, welcomes all librarians, archivists and other information professionals, delegates from different countries, attending the 77th International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ World Library and Information Congress in August 2011.

Libraries, archives and museums are key institutions in the preservation of the historical legacies and cultures; in their efforts to be integrated with the study and research endeavors in different societies; in the processes regarding the sound decision-making at any level of our lives; and, for their significant contribution to the sustainable development of any country. We, in Puerto Rico, treasure those institutions and recognize their importance and impact in our daily living and significance for the present and future generations. In Puerto Rico libraries, archives and museums seek to stimulate access to knowledge and direct their services to the diverse, multicultural clienteles and communities, to satisfy their different needs. We treasure particularly their values and roles seeking to make our citizenry lifelong learners and significant contributors of our destiny.

We are delighted to receive all of you, because your presence makes us strengthen our vision of the importance of and access to information and knowledge in libraries, archives and museums personally, for daily living, and in our public and private endeavors. The IFLA World Congress is, from another standpoint, a great opportunity for the information professionals gathered at this event to update knowledge and skills, to build new and keep on strengthening old ties; a great opportunity to network with other information units abroad and to create new projects and services for the benefit of all.

We thank the IFLA Governing Board and all of you for selecting Puerto Rico as one of IFLA’s Congress site; and we, therefore, welcome you all to San Juan in August 2011. We encourage you to discover and enjoy our country; to discover and enjoy our City of San Juan; to discover, enjoy and simply become part of us.
